Humans sleep for almost 1/3 of their lives. Have you ever wondered why we need so much sleep? And what happens when we don’t get enough sleep?
While we are sleeping our body is performing important biological functions that help maintain both our mental and physical health. Dr. Deldin, the creator of Mood Lifters, emphasizes sleep because of its health benefits, and also because of it’s importance to mood regulation. In our sleep meetings we discuss the different stages of sleep and how our body cycles throughout the night. The video below, from The Economist, illustrates what is happening in our body during each stage of sleep.
Keep in mind that when experts and researchers talk about how much sleep we need, specifically in the 7-8hrs range, they are using averages. Some people may find they need slightly more or slightly less sleep to feel refreshed. If you fall far outside of the 7-8hr range, we suggest you talk to your doctor to make sure you are getting the quality of sleep that ensures you are getting all of the health benefits of a good night’s sleep.
